At Little Souls Rescue and Sanctuary, we care deeply about all creatures — even the wild ones that aren't meant to stay in our care. Every spring and summer, we receive calls about baby birds found on the ground. While it’s lovely to see so many people care, sometimes the kindest thing we can do is not intervene
Most baby birds found on the ground are fledglings — young birds who have left the nest and are learning how to fly. This is a normal and essential part of their development. Their parents are usually nearby, watching and continuing to feed them, even if you don’t see them.
Please do not pick up a fledgling unless absolutely necessary.

It has feathers and is hopping around — this is a fledgling.
It is not injured or in distress.
You don’t see the parents — they are likely watching from a safe distance.
Removing fledglings from the wild can actually lower their chances of survival
Only step in if:
The bird is clearly injured, cold, or in distress.
It’s a nestling (no feathers or just fluff) that has fallen from a reachable nest — you may carefully place it back in.
It is in immediate danger (e.g., in the road or near a predator) — move it just to a nearby bush or shaded safe area.
If in doubt, always contact a wildlife rescue or reach out to us at Little Souls Rescue and Sanctuary for guidance
